Rector's Cup V: Thomasian Alumni Golf Tournament Courtesy Call

By Office of Alumni Relations     05-Feb-2020

The Rector's Cup Tournament Committee with the Office of Alumni Relations paid a courtesy call to the UST Acting Rector, Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD. The said fundraising event for the benefit of the athletes has reached its 5th anniversary. On behalf of the committee, Tournament Chairman Dr. Adrian Paolo Laurel reported the progress of the Rector's Cup since 2016.

In half a decade, the number of alumni golfers who helped in the advocacy increased, and so were the funds collected for the allowances and training of the student athletes. The committee's decision last year to hold the tournament in a two 18-hole golf course will continue as they target to surpass the previous 200-participant record and gather together 250-280 golfers from different colleges.

Fr. Ang gave his sincerest gratitude to the committee and the organizers. He assured everyone of his support to the cause and promised his presence in the upcoming event in May 2020. He hoped that the team captains of every college will be able to interact with their respective deans to build future projects for the university. OAR Director Asst. Prof. Fredeswindo R. Medina also thanked the captains for their undying support in the Rector's Cup and wished that this relationship built throughout the years will last long.

This year, the courtesy call with the Rector was made special with the presence of the athletes and UST IPEA Athletics Moderator Asst. Prof. Rodrigo I. Sambuang, MEd.Fr. Ang proudly introduced the student athletes to the Rector's Cup Tournament Committee. "I hope you would be able to inspire each other mutually," he said. The student athletes who bring home the glory to the university are the motivating factors of the alumni to raise more funds for them.

"The Rector's Cup was made for you," said Dr. Laurel to the athletes. "We are going to continue doing the Rector's Cup because we know that you've been studying really hard... Getting the best education which is a Thomasian education. We are happy every time we watch you play for the university. Rest assured that there is a strong, active, and vibrant Thomasian alumni community behind you."

On behalf of the student athletes, Golden Tigresses senior volleyball player Kristine Francisco stepped forward to thank the alumni for their support. A university varsity since high school, Francisco witnessed personally the progress of the Rector's Cup and how it helped the athletes in terms of their academic life, training, and facilities. Their constant support helped them in their journey whether they win or lose. "Your support has been a huge stepping stone in the development of every athlete here," she added. Francisco was greeted with applause from everyone.

Asst. Prof. Sambuang shared with the group that they aim to win the UAAP General Championship this season and left something to look forward to in the upcoming tournament.
