Thomasian alumni and student leaders discussed about the soft skills and mindset for the future in the forum TALAkayan at Kapihan Series last November 24, 2015 at the 4th floor Multipurpose Hall of Buenaventura G. Paredes, O.P. Building Thomasian Alumni Center.
With the theme “Leaders Nurturing Leaders”, the “Ted talks-like” forum initiated by the Thomasian Alumni Leaders Association (TALA) discusses various topics of social relevance that aims to connect students with the alumni and brief them about their respective profession in the real world through the alumni currently engaged in the respective field.
Participants of the event included the officers of various college-based and local-based student councils, Office of Alumni Relations (OAR), and other prominent alumni such as Prof. Evelyn Songco, Ph.D, Director for Office for Student Affairs, and Mr. Jeffrey O. Tarayao, President of One Meralco Foundation and the Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer of Meralco.
To better equip our younger generation for the future, the participants were first oriented with the ten soft skills needed in the future workplace. These skills included sense making, social intelligence, novel and adaptive thinking, cross cultural competency, computational thinking, new media literacy, transdisciplinary, design mindset, cognitive load management, and virtual collaboration. After which, the alumni shared examples on how and where to apply the following soft skills.
Later on, the “Five Minds for the Future” by Howard Gardner and how the leaders cultivate these cognitive abilities were briefly explained to the student leaders. The five minds is comprised of the Disciplinary Mind, the ability to master major thoughts of at least one professional craft, the Synthesizing Mind, the ability to integrate ideas from various disciplines into one, the Creating Mind, the ability to discover, uncover, and clarify new problems, the Respectful Mind, the ability to appreciate and be aware of individual differences, and the Ethical Mind, the fulfillment of responsibilities as a citizen.
Facilitated by Mr. Henry Tenedero, President of Thomasian Alumni Leaders Association and the 2015 President of Philippine Marketing Association, he told the participants “learn how to cultivate on these soft skills and mindset that will help you and others in the future.”
